Post-Soviet Politics (U00303)

This course introduces students to the politics and government of the post-Soviet states, principally Russia. It commences with theoretical approaches to the USSR, analysis of the disintegration of the Soviet state and its consequences. It then looks in detail at post-Soviet state and institution-building. Foci may vary from year to year, but include party systems, civil society and human rights, democratisation in theory and practice, the nature of post-communism, and comparative post-Soviet government. The international relations of the post-Soviet states will also be analysed.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand the socio-political processes which led to the demise of the Soviet Union;
- account for politcal change analytically and to weigh up competing interpretations of 'transition' and 'democratisation';
- analyse the nature of state and institution-building within the post-Soviet states and in comparative context;
- be sensitive to national and regional differences in and between post-Soviet states; and
- to reflect more widely on global politics through understanding the foreign policy of Russia and the CIS.

Assessment Information

One two-hour examination (60%). One coursework assignment of 2000-2500 words or equivalent (40%).
