History of Islamic Medicine (U00309)

This course aims to introduce students to topics and key figures in the history of Islamic medicine and science. In the process, and just as importantly, the course also addresses the conventional understandings of these topics as offered by scholars in the field to date. Thereby the course also aims to develop students' analytical skills and their interactive capactity as well as improve their ability to present their work and ideas clearly and effectively. The course assumes no ability in Arabic or Persian, or any of the other languages of the Middle East, with the many primary texts used in the course being accessed via translation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to acquaint students with the key issues and figures in the field of the history of Islamic medicine and science and the field of Middle Eastern studies more generally over the period from the formative era of Islam to the early twentieth century.

Assessment Information

One 2,000 word essay (20%) and one three-hour degree examination (80%).
