Education 1A (U00331)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : EDU-1-EducA The main themes covered in Education 1Ah are 'Learning and Teaching' and 'Lifespan Development'. Learning and teaching enables students to interpret and make personal sense of a range of perspectives on learning, teaching and assessment. The aim is to give students an 'ideas tool-kit' for understanding and developing their own learning and to provide a guide to what is involved in learning to be an effective professional educator. It will also explain why Problem Based Learning features prominently in the course. Lifespan Development is the psychological study of human development from before birth into old age. It considers three key aspects of development: physical changes, intellectual development and social development. An extensive website is the main information site for Education 1Ah. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. To identify contrasting perspectives on learning theory 2. engage students in the study of theoretical principles underpinning teaching and learning, and of the different contexts in which these activities take place; 3. Critically consider what makes for effective learning in specific contexts for particular learners 4. To enable students to acquire the skills and understandings that are common to educational professionals, such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) 5. Identify contrasting perspectives that relate to human development across the lifespan 6. To foster a critical attitude to questions relating to learning, teaching and lifespan development; 7. To contribute to the effective preparation of students for their work-based placements, or equivalent, and enable them to understand the relationships between professional action and theoretical perspectives. An essay (2000 words) demonstrating an ability to critically analyse contrasting perspectives on learning theory and lifespan development and the application of these theoretical perspectives to professional action.
