Syntax and Style in English Poetry (U00346)

Close stylistic study of a range of selected English poems, mainly from the twentieth century, with an emphasis on the role of syntax in poetic form, and exploring grammetric and other textual aspects of the use of syntax in poems. Consideration will be given to the different claims of formal and contextual stylistics, and to issues of interpretation and evaluation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will have:
- a basic grasp of the relevance of stylisitcs to the evaluation of poetry;
- an understanding of the claims of contextual and (especially) formal stylistics;
- an awareness of relations in poems involving syntax and linear/metrical form;
- an ability to explore, in appropriate terms, the linguistic and textual structure of poems;
- developed their knowledge of relevant grammatical structures in English.

Assessment Information

(1) Coursework providing 50% of the final mark.
(2) A two-hour written examination providing 50% of the final mark.
