Christianity in Asia: Past Patterns and Present Processes 3/4 (U00513)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : DIV-3-CASIA This course examines the process of Christian expansion to and integration in Asia over the last 2000 years, particularly in East, South-East and South Asia. It will concentrate on the power, purpose and response of the missionized and the missionizing, each of whom have both agendas and agency, the interaction of Christianity with various local religious traditions and expectations and the indigenisation of Christianity in modern movements in Japan, China, India, Philippines, etc. Entry Requirements? After completing the course, participants should:
- be able to deal critically with such concepts as syncretism, inculturation, theologies; - have a clear understanding of the historical variability of Christianity in Asia; - be aware of context, process and reasons for indigenised forms of Christianity; - deal with the sociological implications of a world religion in one specific context/time.
