Comparative Historical Linguistics (U00530)

Detailed introduction to comparative historical linguistics, covering: current and traditional views of internal and comparative reconstruction; Indo-European phonology and morphology; and issues and concepts in historical linguistic classification (language families, including macro-families).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To know, describe and recognise common processes of historical linguistic reconstruction; to understand current and traditional issues relating to these; to accurately describe and analyse primary data; to reason critically; to identify and solve problems; to independently formulate and test hypotheses.
