Working with Young People (U00564)

The purpose of this course is to explore the range of contemporary perspectives on work with young people in non-school settings. It will enable students to analyse the relationship between ideologies and developments in practice, and to explore dilemmas of purpose. Through an examination of contemporary policy in relation to, and practice in work with, young people, participants will critically explore key influences in relation to the life and experience of young people within communities and society. Each session will include analyses of opportunities and possibilities, contradictions and conflicts in focussing on strategies for practice in work with young people.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Describe the impact of changing social structures and policy on the lives and development of young people
Distinguish contrasting models of youth policy and identify their relationship to education and training, housing, income and employment.
Identify and distinguish assumptions, views and ideologies regarding young people in society with particular reference to ideas of independence and autonomy, dependency and control, inclusion and citizenship.
Identify and distinguish between different purposes and stances underpinning work with young people.

Assessment Information

Students will submit a 2500 word paper at the end of the course
