Health Issues in the Community (U00565)

This course introduces participants to a range of health issues of relevance to community educators focussing on the concept of health as a personal, social and professional concern and in particular, health inequalities.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Exhibit critical awareness of a range of definitions of health and their relevance to their personal, social and professional concerns.
Identify the determinants of health and health inequalities.
Describe the development of health care and health promotion in the UK.
Apply a community development model of health promotion in their practice.

Assessment Information

Small groups of participants will identify a particular health issue and make an oral presentation (30 minutes) addressing, from a community development perspective, its personal, social and professional effects (20% of total marks). Individuals will write a term paper of 1000 words detailing their individual contribution to the presentation (80% of total marks).
