Introduction to Community Education (U00568)

The course aims to provide a brief introduction to the history and contemporary development of community education. The significance and contested nature of 'community' provides a reference point for ideological analysis of community education. Important historical developments, an introduction to key figures and influences on community education, and an analysis of contemporary debates will be used to inform our thinking about key trends and policy developments today. The problems and possibilities that arise from the distinction between community education as a field of professional practice and as a broader social practice located in communities will be explored.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completing this course students will be able to:
- Understand the significance of community education as a contested concept and practice
- Identify key historical policy developments in community education in Scotland and the UK
- Explain the main differences between competing ideological models of community education.
- Summarise the main ideas of a range of key thinkers relevant to community education.
- Make key distinctions between community education as a professional activity and as a social practice and assess their significance.

Assessment Information

The assessment will involve a multiple choice set paper equivalent to a 2500 word written assignment, submitted at the end of the Semester.
