Community Education Methods and Approaches 2: Developing Dialogue (U00580)

The course will deepen the students understanding of the worker's educational role and will focus on developing dialogue through structured experiences in the various forms and settings of community education practice. Participants will consider how groups of learners may be helped to develop their capacity to think and act critically, and to support one another to develop strategies, tactics and practices in relation to desired change. Participants will also be required to develop appropriate teaching and learning techniques designed to foster dialogue.

Examine personal and common assumptions about groups and groupwork
Explain the importance of making implicit purposes explicit

Assessment Information

1. Assignment. Participants will set out a 2000 word strategy for developing dialogue with a real or imaginary group (50%).
2. Panel presentation. Students will design a curriculum and a teaching programme for an identified group of participants. Make a 10 minute oral presentation to a panel of 2 tutors, followed by a five-minute question and answer session. A written submission (1000 words) will provide theoretical justification for the curriculum design and teaching programme addressed in the presentation (50%).
