Re-Theorising Community: Implications for Democratic Citizenship (U00590)

The aim of the course is to re-examine the concept of community in the light of both current theoretical debates and the ubiquitous nature of social, economic, political and cultural change. Particular attention is paid to competing accounts of social reality offered by modernist and postmodernist paradigms. The relevance of these theoretical considerations to issues of community, citizenship and democracy is explored and assessed.

Understand the relevance of current intellectual debates to the theoretical problem of community
Develop, deploy and evaluate different kinds of theoretical arguments
Locate the local and particular within the global and universal
Think in a constructively critical way about the contemporary politics of citizenship and democracy

This course will be assessed by:2500-word essay. Choice of titles.
