Cognitive Processes of Reading and Dyslexia (U00592)

To introduce and guide independent study of current research literature in the area of Developmental Dyslexia and Reading. To examine a variety of methods of investigating reading skills. To contrast different theoretical explanations of how and why developmental dyslexia arises. To encourage critical and analytic thinking.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Normally Psychology Methodology 1 (U00651) or equivalent.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : With permission of the Psychology 4 Course Organiser (Dr Martha Whiteman) and the student's Director of Studies, this course may be taken by honours-level Linguistics students.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Describe at least one theory of the acquisition of reading skills.
- Understand which dyslexic symptoms are best explained by each of the models of dyslexia described in the course.
- Understand the broad concepts (but not the technical details) of the connectionist approach to describing and explaining dyslexia.
- Understand the contributions made by the different methodological approaches used to investigate dyslexia.
