Acronym : PPL-4-DCDT-PS This course focuses specifically on the development of the content of three domains of knowledge (i.e. physics, psychology and biology) and how these develop from infancy and throughout childhood and adolescence. It outlines a relatively recent theoretical approach in cognitive development and developmental cognitive science which highlights the influence of the content of knowledge on the process and development of thought. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- To describe and discuss domain-general (e.g. Piaget and Vygotsky) and domain-specific approaches (e.g. Karmiloff-Smith, 1992) to cognitive development.
- To outline and assess research evidence in relation to three specific core areas of thought i.e. physics, psychology and biology from infancy and throughout childhood in order to appraise the appropriateness of the two broad cognitive development approaches. - To examine what the educational implications of domain-general and domain-specific theories of cognitive development.
