Architectural History 1C (U00733)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : ACE-1-AH1C This course surveys the history of British, European and American architecture, from Greek antiquity to the present day. Semester 1 starts with Greek and Roman architecture, the architecture of the Middle Ages and the first great re-evaluation of Antiquity in the Italian Renaissance. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Prohibited combinations : Only students registered on Architectural Design, Architectural Studies may take this course. Other versions of the course are available for students on different programmes. ? A knowledge of the history of western architecture and the cultural contexts which inform it at different periods.
An awareness of the influences that have helped to inform architecture over time, including social, economic and political developments, technical advances and the history of ideas. A knowledge of the relationship between architecture and other related disciplines, including urban design, landscape and other branches of art. A knowledge and understanding of the built environment of the present day in order that intelligent and informed contributions can be made to the current debates on architecture. A knowledge and understanding of the methodology and vocabulary of scholarship and criticism in the field of architecture The ability to extract the essential elements of an historical design and to understand its wider significance as part of the design process. 1x2,000 word essay (15%), 1xprecedent study, comprising exhibition panel and model (15%), 2 tutorial presentations (20%), 2x2hour examination (50%)
