Stylistic Composition 4 (U00786)

This course extends and builds upon the range of the work undertaken and the styles investigated in Counterpoint 3 or Harmony 3. It aims to develop a creative use of the harmonic vocabulary previously acquired, and to provide opportunities for further extension of the student's contrapuntal skills on a larger canvas. Detailed analytical study of the finest models forms an important part of the course.

? Pre-requisites : Counterpoint 3 or Harmony 3.

? Prohibited combinations : This course is not available to students on the BA Humanities and Social Science.

? Contact Teaching Time : 30 minutes per week for 22 weeks

? Additional Class Information : Taught in tutorials in Weeks 1,3,5,7,9,11.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- To write freely and imaginatively within a range of recognised styles. These might include extended movements such as chorale preludes, passacaglias, and sets of variations, where harmonic and contrapuntal considerations are of equal importance.
- To write freely-invented vocal polyphony using a given motif or plainchant, or simply a text.
- To write in more advanced fugal styles.

Assessment Information

Two coursework submissions (35% each) and one 3-hour exam (30%).
