Architectural History: Advanced Study (U00843)

Advanced Study allows a student to develop an aspect of a taught honours course as a 20 credit extension of the original course. The course allows the student to pursue self directed study but the chosen theme is identified in the taught version of the course and the project is provided by the tutor who will provide detailed advice at its commencement.

The project will be based on known, very strong local archival or library resources, including the Special Collections of Edinburgh University Library

? Pre-requisites : Completion of the taught honours course that forms the starting point for the advanced study

? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4)

? Contact Teaching Time : 50 minutes per week for 11 weeks

? Additional Class Information : Structured research project with weekly tutorials

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The student will demonstrate:

A thorough knowledge and understanding of the particular area of study chosen for the project

An ability to develop an independent programme of study calling upon the expertise of others when needed

An ability to analyse buildings using a wide variety of visual media.

An ability to critically analyse and combine different types of evidence including visual, written (both primary and secondary) and, where appropriate, actual buildings in support of an argument.

The student will produce a lengthy and sustained piece of analytical writing which will cogently present their findings and arguments.

5-6000 word essay or 8-10000 word report
