A survey of the main historical, technical and cultural developments in Western music since the end of the Second World War, including case studies of significant musical texts.

? Pre-requisites : Music 2B: Set Works OR Music 2C: Introduction to Compositional Techniques, where students are not on a BMus degree programme.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Use of primary and secondary texts in musicology.
- Knowledge of the principal musical, intellectual and cultural trends in the period.
- Practical engagement with musical texts in the form of performance, analysis and criticism.

Assessment Information

Presentation (20%) essay c.3,000 words (40%) and one 2-hour examination (40%).
