Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course will consider a representative cross-section of Bach's extraordinarily rich repertoire of church cantatas from various points of view, including:
- their context, role and function in the Lutheran liturgy;
- texts: the combination of scriptural text, Lutheran verse and specially-written in musical terms;
- a consideration of the many ways in which the chorale is used;
- symbolism;
- use of instruments, continuo, etc;
- Bach's vocal resources and how he employed them;
- how Bach revised and re-used material.
Although the course will attempt to put Bach's work into historical and liturgical contexts, its main aim will be a study of the music itself.
