Sound Recording 3b: Studio (U00891)

An introduction to sound recording in the studio, including: multi-track recording; post-production; sound recording and its cultural context; radio drama/sound effects; sound and documentary; film sound; and the creative use of sound (electroacoustic composition). Lectures will include technical and contextual topics. The numbers admitted to this course are limited.

? Additional Class Information : Lectures week 1,2,4,7,9 and 11. Demonstrations held in the Electroacoustic Music Studios in smaller groups (assigned in freshers' week) weeks 3,5,8 and 10.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

+ Students will be able to make recordings in various styles within a studio setting with confidence and with an awareness of the technical and aesthetic issues such recordings involve.
+ They will gain a basic understanding of the cultural and aesthetic issues that surround the making of sound recordings for radio drama, documentary and film.
+ They will be able to operate a recording studio based around a hard disk recording system with technical confidence.
+ They will have a basic understanding of the uses of sound recording in the context of electroacoustic music.

Assessment Information

One edited studio recording, mastered to CD (30%); One free recording, mastered to CD (40%); One report on both recordings (no more than 1,500 words) including list of takes where necessary (15%); One set of course work comprising three recording projects assigned throughout the semester (15%).
