Scottish Historiography (U00896)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-SHISTOR

A history book is not just the product of facts unearthed from the past. It is also the product of an historian's attempt to understand and organise such facts in a manner equal to the demands of their readers. Historiography – the study of how history is written – is a subject that today's historians recognise to be vital for understanding the (often powerful) legacy of previous historians. This team-taught course is interested in how Scottish historiography has developed from the era of the Reformation to the present, due partly to general trends in historical scholarship, and partly to trends specific to the Scottish context. A number of influential historians and intellectual movements are considered in their Scottish contexts, touching on all eras of Scottish history from prehistory to contemporary Scotland. It is a core course in the Scottish History degree programme, but offers a degree of wider applicability that can benefit any student of history.

- demonstrate, by way of essay and examination, insight into where current historiography stands in relationship to the history of the discipline;
- demonstrate, by way of essay and examination, sensitivity as readers of secondary historiography from different periods;
- demonstrate the following transferable skills: independent gathering of relevant evidence pertaining to a posed problem; critical consideration of evidence in order to arrive at sound conclusions; evaluating the work of others, including peers; presenting evaluations and conclusions clearly in both written and oral form; independent management of personal timetable, workload and other priorities in order to meet established deadlines.
