Special History in Music: The Origins and Early Development of Opera (U00939)

This course aims to deepen a student's understanding of how the important art form of opera first evolved. It seeks to make him/her more aware of the many factors that constitute or that have affected opera, and thus hopes to widen the student's historical and cultural perspectives and to enhance his/her critical appreciation of dramatic musical works from all periods. The problems that early operas present to today's performers are also stressed.

? Pre-requisites : Music 2B: Set Works OR Music 2C: Introduction to Compositional Techniques, where students are not on a BMus degree programme.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will have a better understanding of how opera first evolved.

They will be more aware of the many factors that constitute opera and that have affected the genre and its early development.

Through the evaluation of musical, dramatic and historical evidence, and the presentation of their own arguments and conclusions, the artistic and critical faculties of the students will be enhanced.

Thus the students should be better equipped to appreciate dramatic musical works of all periods.

Assessment Information

Presentation (10%) coursework essay c.3,000 words (45%), and one 2 hour degree examination (45%).
