Vienna around 1900 (U01012)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : ACE-3-AHVienna The course will focus on the architectural avant-garde in Austria at the turn of the twentieth century, with particular reference to the work of Otto Wagner, the 'Wagnerschule', Josef Hoffmann, Joseph-Maria Olbrich, Adolf Loos, and Ludvig Wittgenstein. In studying the evolution of a modern architectural language and polemic, the course will locate these developments in the historical context of Viennese architecture and relate them to contemporary developments in the other arts. The course aims to introduce students to the intellectual and artistic ferment that marked the cultural life of Vienna at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Viennese experience around 1900 can be characterised as a crisis of language. Traditional techniques and syntax were challenged in painting, literature, music, and architecture, and new languages proposed that vacillated between asceticism and ornamentalism. Vienna was at the forefront of radical artistic thought in 1900. From a close study of Viennese examples, students will gain insights into the dominant cultural mode of twentieth century Europe: modernism. The honours course requires that students read and research in a more self-directed way than in previous years. They are called upon to organise more diffuse and challenging material, constructing more sophisticated architectural-historical argument, informed by analysis of primary sources and corrected by critical awareness with regard to secondary texts.
