Scotland and America, 1603 - 1917 (U01079)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-4-SCAM This 40 credit special subject course has been developed out of a course previously offered as a one term option within a shorter chronology (latterly 1700-1830). It reflects work on a proposal to write a Companion to Scotland and the Americas by the course organiser with Professor Susan Manning (English Literature, University of Edinburgh) and Jenni Calder (formerly of the National Museums of Scotland). Although this project has not yet been commissioned by a publisher, it reflects the recent increase of interest in the subject as illustrated by the success of Arthur Herman's The Scottish Enlightenment: The Scots' Invention of the Modern World (2002). A principal aim of the course is to enable students to evaluate current literature in the context of existing research and to analyse the literature currently available critically. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
As the language of quality assurance has changed from aims and objectives to learning outcomes, there has been a change from perceiving the rationale for a course as separate from its objectives, to accepting that it is part of them. The course is designed to incorporate a survey of Scottish trade with America and emigration to America from 1603-1914 in the autumn term, followed by a second term studying cultural relations between Scotland and America from a historical perspective, but with some opportunity for students to explore the possibility of a more interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural relations in a transatlantic context. The intention is to encourage a reflective, proactive approach to learning in students. There will also be an emphasis on the use of primary sources in the course which will be reflected in course assessment.
