Australia's sense of national identity has been profoundly shaped by its soldiers' participation in war. This is particularly true of the Australian experience of the Gallipoli campaign during the First World War. The 'Anzac' participants in that campaign have been portrayed as quintessential Australians. However, the qualities that they are thought to exemplify have shifted subtly over the years. This has been due to social and political change and to the experience of other wars that have challenged core values. The course examines the social, political and military aspects of Australian involvement in the First and Second World Wars and in Vietnam in order to enable an assessment of the ways in which they have been remembered in history books, film and commemorative activities.

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above. The aim of this option is to develop participants' understanding of the cultural history of war. At the end of the course, students will be able to:

Assess the impact of war on Australian national identity
Understand the nature of Australian participation in war during the twentieth century
Recognise some aspects of the interaction between a society and its history
Analyse information in order to formulate an argument

One 3,000 word essay -one third of overall assessment
One two-hour exam - two thirds of overall assessment
