American Secret Intelligence 1898-2004 (U01215)

This course examines the institutions of secret foreign intelligence in the United States, ranging from the State Department's U-1 in World War I to the Central Intelligence Agency in more recent times. But the course is not restricted to foreign intelligence. Attention is given to counter-intelligence, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, covert operations, civil liberties, congressional oversight and spy fiction. Among the topics covered are the spy-chief personality, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and the intelligence dimension of the 2003 Iraq War.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students on the course will improve their capacity to be good historians, will learn how to handle primary documents in a critical manner, will develop a capacity for handling complex data and reducing them to credible generalizations, will hone their writing skills and will become knowledgeable about international affairs. The course will help the student to become a responsible citizen and will equip him or her for a wide spectrum of professions, including those with an international dimension.

Assessment Information

One 3000 word essay per semester.
