Ideology and Literature (U01385)

This course examines a number of texts primarily, but not exclusively, from the perspective of changing conceptions of ideology from Marx to the present day. Marx and Althusser will form the principal theoretical perspectives, but secondary reading will include the work of Georg Lukacs, Raymond Williams, Jerome McGann, Terry Eagleton and Frederick Jameson.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Pass in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course aims to enhance students' knowledge of the relationship between ideology and literature. It will develop their critical skills and ability to read reflectively.

Assessment Information

1 essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 examination essay of 3,000 words (75%)
