The Politics of the Canon (U01396)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-3-U01396 This course is an investigation of ideas about cultural value, in which, by studying appropriate theoretical works, we ask how it comes about that certain texts are judged to be `literary' while others are not. What processes are involved in making such judgements, how are they made, by whom, on the basis of what criteria, and how are such judgements challenged or overturned? In short, what constitutes the `literary', and how does it relate to other cultural values? Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the successful student will have a knowledge of contemporary theoretical debates about the canon and cultural value, and a good critical knowledge of a range of sophisticated arguments concerning how some texts become `literary' while others do not.

1 essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 examination essay of 3,000 words (75%)
