The course begins by examining Brecht's theories and practice in the theatre and goes on to trace his possible subsequent influence, theoretic and stylistic, on the British stage since the fifties, assessing what forms and tactics contribute most to 'political theatre' and discussing various forms of political theatre and their effectiveness.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

Students should acquire a knowledge of Brecht's drama, and his theories and practice in the theatre, along with an understanding of the extent to which these influenced subsequent theatrical writing and practice in Britain. They should also develop a broad understanding of the nature, tactics and effectiveness of political theatre in the C20th.
