From Margin to Centre (U01475)

This course will attempt to complicate and interrogate the notion of 'minority' as it has been used historically in the United States with its implications of marginalisation and isolation from the mainstream. Mexican, Caribbean and Native American are among the cultural diasporas that are recuperated and included in this amplified American cultural territory as is the experience of displacement itself.

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course is intended to introduce students to the concept of 'New World Literatures'. It will enable them to answer the question: What does it mean to be an "American" in the late Twentieth century? These multiple cultural perspectives are inseparable from concepts of culture, class and history.

Assessment Information

1 essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 examination essay of 3,000 words (75%).
