History of Art 1A (VS1) (U01594)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : ACE-1-U01594

History of Art 1 is designed as an introduction to the study of the history of art and visual culture at university level. It introduces the methods and terminology of the discipline of art history through the medium of chronological surveys of art studied in its wider social and political context (two lectures a week). HA1A (The Age of Revolutions) starts with the comparatively familiar, western art of recent centuries. In addition, a separate strand of lectures (one lecture each week) is devoted to introducing concepts and resources for the study of the history of art. During this semester the student takes a seminar course (one seminar a week) devoted to an art historical topic that serves as an introduction to the study of the history of art through specific examples. The assessed course-work consists of one essay. There are no special requirements for entry to the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

History of Art 1 consists of two semester units but each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course. Students who take this course come with very different levels of knowledge of the art history. Our intention is that by the end all will have acquired an understanding of the important issues raised by the subject and of the methods used to deal with them; they will also have a command of the basic concepts and vocabulary of the discipline. History of Art 1 is not a continuous survey course but it introduces students to the major developments in the history of western art from the later Middle Ages to the present day and aims to give students a sense of chronology. In the lecture units and seminar courses students will learn the methods of art history through the study of the work of selected artists, types of objects, and periods of art. Emphasis will be placed on the critical analysis and interpretation of visual and historical materials, both in the lectures and in seminars. Seminars will make use of material in museums and galleries in Edinburgh. Essay writing and making verbal contributions in class will develop the students' communication skills.
