Entrepreneurship and Small Firms (U01650)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MSE-3-ESF Entrepreneurship and small firms are important to the vitality, development and growth of an economy, the generation of wealth, employment and the development of new products and innovations. Yet, small firms are not simply scaled down versions of large firms. They face peculiar challenges and impediments and impact upon the economy and society in a variety of ways. This course will examine theory and practice relevant to the role of entreprneurship and small firms in economic development (including issues of both public and business policy and praxis) and many of the specific managerial problems they encounter. By the end of the course students should have developed:
A critical appreciation of the theoretical models of entreprenurship and their practical relevance. An understanding of the changing role of small firms in the economy and their contribution to social and economic development. A critical understanding of the role of public polic in encouraging entrepreneurship and small firm development. An understanding of the influence of gender and ethnicity on patterns of entrepreneurship. An understanding of the nature of business functions, such as planning, marketing, training innovation and finance in the smaller firm. Assessment Information
Coursework: 30%. Final degree examination 70%.
