Culture and Society in the Portuguese Speaking World (U01662)

This course will provide an interdisciplinary survey of the culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking world. Students will be introduced to the 7 nations whose official language is Portuguese, although specific focus will be placed on Portugal, Brazil, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. The diversity of cultural expression across three continents will be explored through the study of three literary texts in their historical context, as well as through reference to other forms of articulation, such as music and art.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : There are no specific requirements for students planning to take this course. However, some experience of the study of literature and/or history at first year level would be preferable. This course is not normally available to first year students.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : For visiting students, the course is available only with the explicit permission of the Course Organiser for Portuguese.

A quota of 35 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) Students admitted to a degree programme including Portuguese and Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place; (2) students taking an MEL degree; (3) students making a free choice of outside subject for an Honours degree in a humanities subject.

Note: If the total number of registrations exceeds 35, a ballot will be taken of category 3 students at the first meeting of the class.

? Costs : The purchase of literary texts - total cost approximately £35.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will develop analytical, communication and presentation skills through group discussions and individual presentations on aspects of literature and history.
- Students will learn to handle historical debate and how to adopt a critical approach to literature assessing the relationship between history and aspects of cultural expression.
- On completing the course, students should be familiar with the background to the cultural and artistic expression of Portugal, Brazil and Mozambique, whilst also knowing something of the other nations whose language is Portuguese. They will also be better able to consider the present in relation to the past and understand the wider role of literature and memory in the shaping of a nation's development.
