Portuguese Language for Combined Honours Degrees with Portuguese as a Named Component (U01697)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-4-U01697 This course is ONLY for those students taking Portuguese as a named part of a Combined honours degree. The course is concerned with familiarising you with a wide variety of registers and the complex grammatical structures of European Portuguese. Teaching will be based on a booklet of course materials containing texts ranging from literary to journalistic with thematic emphasis on current events relating to Portugal and the Portuguese-Speaking world. In conjunction with the written materials which you will be expected to read and prepare in advance of each class, there will also be regular trips to the Language and Humanities Centre for listening comprehension practice. You will be introduced to summary writing, advanced comprehension, translation and composition. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : This course is ONLY for those students taking Portuguese as a named part of a Combined honours degree. Students are required to have spent at least 8 weeks in approved residence in a Portuguese-speaking country, including an approved course of study and must have attained 55% or above in U01680 - Portuguese Language for Beginners. (For Visiting Students see 'Special Arrangements' below.) ? Special Arrangements for Entry : For visiting students wishing to enrol, the course is available only with the explicit permission of the Course Organiser for Portuguese and the Convenor of Subject. ? Costs : Students are expected to pay for course materials at cost. Improve your ability as a linguist by making you aware of the complexity of advanced structures. Familiarise you with Computer-aided learning. Enhance your ability to make clear and easy-to-follow presentations using appropriate audio-visual materials. Encourage you to perform consistently in all types of work throughout the year. Specific Outcomes: To improve your confidence and accuracy of expression in spoken and written Portuguese. To expand your vocabulary to include a wide range of idiomatic expressions. To improve your level of accuracy when using complex structures. To enable you to perform the basic functions of a liason interpreter from and into Portuguese. To improve your understanding of written Portuguese through access to and close analysis of a range of written materials in a range of registers. To enhance your understanding of 'media' Portuguese through a range of 'video comprehension' tests both on paper and on computer.
