Portuguese Language Option (U01698)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-4-U01698 This course is concerned with familiarising the student with a wide variety of registers and many of the complex grammatical structures of Portuguese. One hour per week will be based on written language and one hour per week on spoken language. Teaching will be based on a booklet of materials containing a range of texts. In conjunction with the prepared written materials, students are expected to read and prepare in advance of each class and make us of the Languages and humanities Centre for audio-visual practice. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : This course is for those students taking Portuguese as an option only as part of a Degree including Spanish. Students are required to have spent at least 4 weeks of approved residence (including an approved language course) in a Portuguese-speaking country. Students must have attained a pass in U01680 - Portuguese Language for Beginners. (For Visiting Students see 'Special Arrangements' below.) ? Special Arrangements for Entry : FOR VISITING STUDENTS: THIS COURSE RUNS OVER TWO SEMESTERS, SO IT WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE TO VISITING STUDENTS SPENDING AN ENTIRE YEAR IN EDINBURGH. Also note: for visiting students wishing to enrol, the course is available only with the explicit permission of the Course Organiser for Portuguese. ? Costs : Students are expected to purchase an in-house course-book which contains photocopied (with permission) materials and assignments. The course-book is sold at cost price. To improve your ability as a linguist by making you aware of the complexity of advanced structures. To familiarise you with Computer-aided learning. To improve your level of accuracy when using complex structures. To enable you to perform the basic functions of a liason interpreter from and into Portuguese. To improve your understanding of written Portuguese through access to and close analysis of a range of written materials in a range of registers. To enhance your understanding of 'media' Portuguese through a range of 'video comprehension' tests both on paper and on computer.
