Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics (U01699)

The nature of the Soviet regime is something poorly understood by many students, who do not remember the Soviet Union, but analysing its legacy is still essential to understanding the politics of its successor states. This course provides a thematic and rhetorical introduction to the rise and fall of Soviet power, the nature of post-communism and democracy in the former Soviet states.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is designed to introduce students to think critically about the nature of Soviet power and post-Soviet change. At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to explain the political processes leading to the rise and fall of the Soviet state, understand key institutions and features of the Soviet state, and account conceptually for post-Soviet change.

Assessment Information

One two-hour examination, weighted at 60%
One coursework assignment of 2,000-2,500 words or equivalent, weighted at 40%.
