Modern Japanese Literature 4 (U01751)

Close textual study in Japanese will be combined with background reading mainly in English. The majority of the course will consist of tutorials focussing on reading, translation and literary appreciation of the set texts, with some sessions set aside for discussion of other works by the selected authors. There will also be some lectures outlining the background to modern Japanese literature and to the authors studied.

? Pre-requisites : Successful completion of Japanese Language Programme and Study Abroad 3 (Single or Combined)

? Costs : Costs of reproducing main texts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To enable students to read, translate and evaluate critically modern literary texts by selected authors

To familiarize them with the literary contexts to which these authors belong

Assessment Information

Annotated literary translation of a chapter from the set text (20%)
3,500 word essay (20%)
Degree examination (60%)
