Body in Literature (U01984)

This course will consider the ways in which the human body has been a central object of discussion in literature from the Renaissance onwards. Students will explore how the human body has been described, variously, as a biological entity, clothing for the soul, a site of cultural production, a psycho-sexual construct and a material encumbrance. The course will consider how each of these different approaches brings with it a range of anthropological, political, theological and psychological discourses that explore and construct identities and subject positions.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course successful students will have learned to explore the politics of bodily representation, in terms of both how the body has been depicted and how it has become a trope employed to figure wider social and philosophical ideas. They will understand how the way the body is figured differs between genres of writing and across different historical periods. They will recognise and be able to debate how in contemporary culture the body is located at the heart of debates about race, gender and sexuality.
