Critical Practice: Prose (U01989)

The course will examine a range of English prose and narrative forms. It will examine issues including: the rise of the novel and narrative history; distinctions between story and discourse; realism; narrators and narrative 'frames'; free indirect style and other means of transcribing consciousness; irony and tone; temporality, structure and form; genre; fictionality and metafiction. The implications of such issues for primary critical analysis will be demonstrated and explored.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire understanding and knowledge of a wide range of prose and narrative modes, along with awareness of critical and analytic tactics applicable to them, and experience of ways these may be effectively deployed. Critical and analytic proficiency and interpretative skills in the areas of prose and narrative should be accordingly enhanced.
