Celtic Civilisation 1B (U01993)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : LLC-1-U01993

Nowadays the Celts are big business. The contemporary world has seen a remarkable 'revival' in 'Celtic' arts and crafts, spirituality, music and literature – and of course a revitalisation of Celtic languages (there are even official translations of Harry Potter!). These developments have looked to the past for inspiration, but there is also a danger that they have confused, obscured or misunderstood the achievements of 'Celtic civilisation'.

Celtic Civilisation 1B is concerned with notable achievements of Celts past and present, in some of the key realms – like the arts – that are often linked with Celticity today. The course lectures take students through case studies in artistic, intellectual and political achievement from different periods of history. Fortnightly tutorials involve them in dealing with questions surrounding the power of present concerns to influence notions of Celticity in the past.

Visiting and 'outside-subject' students are most welcome on the course. COMPLETION OF CELTIC CIVILISATION 1A IS NOT A REQUIREMENT.
