Creative Writing Part I: Poetry (U01994)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-3-U01994 The course aims by seminar and workshop to introduce students to theoretical, historical and practical issues involved in the composition of poetry. Issues to be addressed include: the interplay of the tripartite division of poetry into sound (melopoeia), image (phanopoeia) and idea (logopoeia); the arguments for and against free verse, as opposed to the traditional patterning of metre and rhyme; methods of gathering and redrafting material. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the course successfully will attain a broadened awareness of stylistic possibilities in poetry. By practice they will develop compositional skills in a way that complements more general English studies, and be introduced to the possibilities of publishing their work.
