Shakespeare: Modes and Genres (U02001)

Since the appearance of the First Folio in 1623 with its divisions of the plays into comedies, tragedies, and histories a discussion of genre has been central to critical debates about Shakespeare. This course sets out to examine the usefulness of these generic classifications, through exploration of a wide range of Shakespearean plays.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the course will be equipped to recognise how an awareness of the specific conventions of genre can help to explain the structure of a play and the actions of its protagonists. At the same time, they will learn to examine the fluidity of generic boundaries, and the originality of Shakespeare's exploitation of them.
