Sidney and Spenser (U02060)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-3-U02060 The course will provide the opportunity for an in depth study of two of the most important figures of the English Renaissance: Philip Sidney and Edmund Spenser. Because their writings bear a diverse and cosmopolitan set of cultural and political influences, they offer a unique insight into the culture and history of sixteenth-century England. While the course will focus on the major work of these two authors - Sidney's Arcadia and Spenser's The Faerie Queen - it will also take in their more minor writings as well. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature ? Students who successfully complete the course will explore not only the writing of Sidney and Spenser but the ways in which they were influenced by the intellectual and artistic climate of continental Europe and Renaissance ideas and modes of thought. They will alos explore the engagement of sixteenth century writing with politics and public affairs. Students will become familiar with a very broad range of literary forms from prose treaties, through sonnet sequences, to pastoral eclogues.
