The course will aim to extend students' knowledge of literature in English, with some texts in translation for comparison, by close examination of irony. Because irony is primarily a question of style it will enhance the student's capacity for close reading. The attention to the social history and determination of irony will also raise questions of the construction of literary value and the literary tradition.
