Shakespearean Sexualities (U02071)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-4-U02071 This course will explore the construction of sexuality within Shakespearean texts, with reference to modern theoretical approaches to the study of literature, including feminist and queer theory. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt int he second year course. Passes in third year courses in the subject area amounting to at least 40 credits. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving Enlgish or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature. ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be encouraged to examine the way in which gender roles were conceptualised during the Renaissance (that is, what did it mean to be 'masculine' or 'feminine'),focusing especially on the expression, or repression, of sexual desire. Students will examine heterosexual, homosexual and homosocial relationships and learn to explore the relevance of these categories to Shakespearean texts. Students will also be asked to consider how issues of race and/or nationality intersect with the construction of gender and sexuality.

1 essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 take-away examination essay of 3,000 words(75%)
