Methods of Social Research A (U02099)

This course is designed to meet the needs of students requiring training in small-scale primary data collection in the social sciences. It will be available as a stand-alone course, as well as acting as the first of two compulsory courses within the junior honours year in Sociology, and in its combined honours degrees (except that with Psychology).

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Social Enquiry 2

? Co-requisites : Candidates for Sociology honours must take Methods of Social Research B.

? Prohibited combinations : Candidates may not take more than one other 20-credit Research Methods honours course

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have:
- a basic knowledge of research design as it relates to case studies, the selection of cases and informants, and issues of access and ethics
- an understanding and ability to carry a small-scale research projects using data collection methods such as fieldwork and unstructured, semi-structured and structured interviews.
- an awareness of the issues generated in gaining access to data-sets and documents.
- basic skills in the analysis of semi- or unstructured data in small data sets.

Assessment Information

Two take-home exercises (50%).
One take-home examination (50%).
