This course is an introduction to the political, economic, social and cultural history of the Middle East from 1952-present. It covers the coming to independence of national-states in the region after the Second World War and examines subsequent challenges and transformations, from nationalism, statism and socialism to neoliberal globalization.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1) Basic understanding of Middle Eastern history 1952-present

2) Enhanced ability to pose meaningful historical questions and to critically evaluate them.

3) Improved skills in research and written and oral presentation.

Assessment Information

Examination: one 2 hour exam (60%)
Course Work: one 2,000 word essay and tutorial contribution (40%)
