Community Education Work Based Learning: Organisational Development (U02135)

Community educators, and allied professionals, need to be able to manage and develop organisations. In this course, students will gain access to essential analytical and practical tools to help them develop the necessary competence. Participants will learn through engagement with organisational development issues in their own settings. The course will link to the work situation through weekly group tutorials and students will work in learning clusters to identify and develop their understanding of these issues. The course will culminate in a mini-conference addressing the possibilities and constraints for contemporary social purpose organisations in the changing policy context in Scotland. The conference will be organised and run by the learning clusters to which practitioners and others will be invited.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completing this course students will be able to:
1. Use appropriate management concepts and analytical frameworks to interpret problems and resolve issues in community education and other social purpose organisations.
2. Make and defend judgements with respect to a range of factors in organisations including aims, functions, structures and people management, where data/information is limited or comes from a range of sources.
3. Articulate a considered position with respect to complex ethical and professional issues in accordance with current professional and/or ethical codes or practices.
4. Explain factors affecting the development of their organisation within the changing policy context.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ways of investigating issues in organisational development.
6. Organise a mini-conference based on an identified issue utilising a range of media technologies.

Assessment Information

Individual Task
With reference to their work in the four structured exercises, students will critically review the knowledge, skills and practices gained through their engagement with the course (2000 words). 50% of the total marks

Group Task
With reference to their conference input, students will consider original and creative ways to bring about change and development in work settings (2000 words). 50% of the total marks
