Islamic History 1b (U02152)

This course is an introduction to the religious, political, social and cultural history of the Islamic world from 945 to 1258. It covers the break-up of the Abbasid Caliphate into smaller states, the Crusades, and the impact of the nomadic Turkish and Mongol invasions. It examines the Sunni/Shi'ite divisions and the role of jihad in medieval Islamic society.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1) Basic understanding of Middle Eastern history 945-1258.

2) Enhanced ability to pose meaningful historical questions and to evaluate them critically.

3) Improved skills in research and written and oral presentation.

Assessment Information

Examination: one 2 hour exam (60%)
Course Work: one 2,000 word essay and tutorial contribution (40%)
