Comparative Protest Movements (U02154)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : SPS-3-POPROTEST This course compares the emergence, development, strategies and ideologies of protest movements in the USA, Canada and Britain, paying particular attention to the trans-national and trans-Atlantic connections between protest movement organisations. Among the topics studied will be protest movements that have arisen as a result of concerns about racial injustice, war, gender inequality, national identity and discrimination on grounds of sexuality. Students will be encouraged to compare protest movements across historical periods since the 1960s. They will also be encouraged to learn directly from a range of written and audio-visual sources in which activists reflect on their experiences of being directly involved in protest movements. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have:
1. Aquired knowledge of specific protest movements in North America and Britain. 2. Developed an ability to compare protest movements in the USA, Canada and Britain. 3. Appreciated how the political cultures of USA, Canada and Britain shape the trajectories of protest movements in each country. 4. Enhanced their abilities to use both secondary and primary sources in comparing protest movement activities across countries. 5. Honed their transferable skills through seminar discussion, presentation and group exercises such as interviews and role play. Assessment Information
This course will be assessed by a 4,000 word essay (100%).
