This course provides an introduction to the discipline of ethnology, with particular reference to Scotland. Topics covered include custom and community; performance and transmission of traditional music, song and oral narrative.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should have:
1. actively engaged with core ethnological texts and other media.
2. developed a critical appreciation of modes of traditional performance delivery, tranmsission and cultural representation.
3. an solid awareness of key themes characterising the study of the cultural traditions of Scotland.
