For Semester 1 Visiting Students only (please note that lectures/tutorial are with Edinburgh students enrolled on the full year version of this course). This course provides an introduction to the discipline of ethnology, with particular reference to Scotland. Topics covered include custom and community; performance and transmission of traditional music, song and oral narrative.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should have:
1. actively engaged with core ethnological texts and other media.
2. developed a critical appreciation of modes of traditional performance delivery, tranmsission and cultural representation.
3. an solid awareness of key themes characterising the study of the cultural traditions of Scotland.

One essay of 2-3000 words (40 %)
One exam (50%)
Tutorial exercises (10%)
